Nicholas M. Lonstad is Principal and at Great Northern. Mr. Lonstad has been in the investment industry for over a decade, and he is practiced in both traditional (equity/fixed income) and alternative (hedge fund/private market) investments. His experience has spanned both discretionary and non-discretionary (consultative) capacities. His client relationship history has encompassed high-net-worth to ultra-high-net-worth families and individuals, foundations, and institutional fund-of-funds.
At Great Northern since 2013, his primary responsibilities include client service, portfolio analysis, asset allocation, investment manager and strategy research, retirement analysis, client portfolio reporting and performance measurement, as well as trading. He is also responsible for written market commentary and topical research briefs. Mr. Lonstad has built out and expanded the portfolio analytics for gauging and measuring portfolio risks, as well as building out and enhancing the firm s investment due diligence process.
Prior to joining Great Northern, Mr. Lonstad was an Associate Consultant and Senior Performance Analyst with the ultra- high-net-worth consultancy, CTC Consulting (now CTC MyCFO). CTC advised on approximately $26 billion in client assets across 100 client relationships, which included families, foundations and family offices. Average client portfolio size was approximately $200 Million. While at CTC, Mr. Lonstad worked with clients on investment policy creation, asset allocation, investment implementation planning and execution, risk management, mission related & ESG investing, portfolio analysis, investment manager selection and monitoring, as well as performance measurement and reporting. He spearheaded efforts to model and understand complex risks in portfolio construction, by creating the risk management program which was a basis for the firm s Investment Risk Committee. In addition, he worked in enhancing complex performance reporting systems, as well as creating new ways to visualize client portfolio histories.
Before launching his Investment career at CTC in 2007, Mr. Lonstad attended and worked at Washington State University. Employed as a Research Assistant, he worked with the Public Policy Department on research involving children with Autism and health care facilities. Outside his research position, he also tutored children with Autism utilizing concepts in art therapy for social skill-building. An environmental advocate, Mr. Lonstad was also the public speaker for the Social and Environmental Justice Group, where he brokered engagement between the environmental sciences and business schools.
He received his BA in Finance with Honors from Washington State University, where he was the 2007 recipient of the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Business – an acknowledgment of his academic record and cross-disciplinary involvement on campus and in the community.
Mr. Lonstad is proud to call the Pacific Northwest his home since 1993. His outside interests include distance running (where he has completed several marathon races), landscape photography (his work can be found at www.nmlphoto.com), and exploring the outdoors through hiking, bushwhacking, caving and canyoneering (rappelling waterfalls). Currently, through a non-profit organization, Mr. Lonstad has been exploring and documenting off-trail waterfalls in efforts to build out new trails in the Columbia River Gorge and greater area. Endlessly curious, his intellectual pursuits include evolutionary psychology, philosophy, futurism, physics, and historical economics.
